In Western Thrace, a Muslim minority party held a demonstration in Komotini today after issuing a pamphlet in Turkish calling on Muslims to act against the alleged suppression by the Greek state.
It calls on them to “rise and claim the lands of their forefathers,” to “claim religious freedom,” to “preserve their Turkish identity,” and to demand the establishment of Turkish schools and Turkish teachers.
Unfortunately for them, about 150 local Greek residents, backed by nationalist militants as of yet unknown affiliation, were having none of it.
They proceeded to pelt the marchers and the police protecting them with rocks, chairs & bottles. Police responded with tear gas after the crowd refused an order to disperse, but no arrests were made.
